BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed that India will be led by Rohit Sharma in the 2024 T20 World Cup. The T20 World cup will start from 2nd June 2024.
After the ODI World Cup final many of the fans thought that this might be the last ICC tournament led by the Indian skipper. But now Mr. Shah confirmed the news that Rohit will be seen in the leadership role for the upcoming ICC event.
The test series is going between India-England where the 3rd match started in Rajkot and in Rajkot during an event the BCCI secretary said,
“In 2023 (final) at Ahmedabad, even though we did not win the World Cup after 10 straight wins, we won hearts. I want to promise you that in 2024 (T20 World Cup) in Barbados (venue for the final), under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, hum Bharat ka jhanda gadenge (we will hoist the Indian flag). Rohit was captaining (in the past in other formats) and he came back for the Afghanistan series, which means we were going to let him continue forward. He (Rohit) has the ability, as I said, we won 10 games in the ODI World Cup. We didn’t win the final, but it’s part and parcel of the game. Whoever plays better, wins.”
India will play their first match in the shortest ICC tournament on 5th June against Ireland.
Earlier Hardik Pandya was handed over the captaincy of Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from Sharma and after it was highly debatable that the Indian skipper of all formats might be relieved from the shortest format also. It will be the second time when Rohit will lead the team In T20 World Cup, earlier he took his team to the Semi Final in 2022 where they lost the final against the English team by 10 wickets.
Mr Shah also confirms that Rahul Dravid will be with the team at least till the T20 World Cup and also added about Virat has done so much for 15 years and now he has full liberty to take leave.
