Shami’s shock exit, will miss IPL and T20 World Cup

Indian star pacer Mohammad Shami will miss the upcoming IPL 2024 and T20 World Cup due to the ankle injury. Earlier it was expected that he might get fit before the league but now he had to go for the surgery.

He was the highest wicket taker in the 2023 ODI World Cup and helped his team to reach the final. He got injured during the World Cup but he continued playing the matches by taking the injections. After that ICC tournament he went to NCA (National Cricket Academy) in Bengaluru where he got treatments from the physio and doctors there. But he got no improvement from there.

After that he went to the UK where he again took injections but those didn’t work for him and now the only option left is surgery. From the surgery he needs at least 7-8 months to fully recover, which means he will be unable to play the 2024 IPL which is going to start from March 22nd. Also he will miss the upcoming T20 World Cup in USA and West Indies.

A BCCI source told PTI, “Shami was in London in the last week of January to take special ankle injections and he was told that after three weeks, he can start light running and take it from thereon. But the injection hasn’t worked and now the only option left is surgery. He will shortly leave for the UK for surgery. IPL seems out of question.”

Now it raises the question that if the surgery is needed for Shami then they must do it earlier without going for injections to recover.

The Indian pacer is playing for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League and is the key bowler for the team as he performed brilliantly in the two seasons of this franchise. First he claimed 22 wickets in 2022 and then 28 wickets in 2023.

GT has named their new skipper Shubman Gill as Hardik Pandya joined Mumbai Indians (MI) as a leader.
