Huge turn around for Afghanistan in the World Cup

Finally after 14 successive defeats, Afghanistan registered their first World Cup and that too against the defending champion. They won the match  by 69 runs.  

Afghanistan scored 284/10 in 49.5 overs and in reply England only managed 215/10 in 40.3 overs.

The Afghans looked brilliant from the start and posted 114 runs for the first wicket. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (80 runs) and Ibrahim Zadran (28 runs) gave a solid start to the team. Gurbaz showed the destruction from the starting and played only 57 balls in which he hit 8 fours and 4 sixes. 

Ikram Alikhil (58 runs) played his first World Cup and scored a brilliant half century. He took out his team as after a solid start they lost 3 sudden wickets. In the end spinners Rashid Khan (23 runs) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (28 runs) ended the innings to 284 runs in 49.5 overs by losing all the wickets.  

Adil Rashid dismissed the most batsmen as he took 3 wickets while Mark Wood settled with 2 wickets. Reece Topley, Liam Livingstone and Joe Root got 1 wicket each.  

During the chase, the English team lost wickets at regular intervals. Harry Brook (66 runs) scored most runs for his team. Dawid Malan (32 runs) scored well but couldn’t convert his innings into  a big one. At the end they scored 215 runs in 40.3 overs and lost all their wickets. 

Mujeeb Ur Rahman after showing a destructive knock with the bat, here grabbed 3 wickets. The most experienced spinner from the side, Rashid Khan also got 3 wickets. Mohammad Nabi got 2 wickets. Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazalhaq Farooqi got 1 wicket each.
