Gautam Gambhir takes over as Indian Team’s Head Coach

One of the successful former Indian batters, Gautam Gambhir, has been named the new head coach of the Men’s Indian team. It will serve his place for three and a half years, which means it will end in December 2027.

It was in contention with WV Raman who coached the Indian Women team earlier, but the successful stats of Gambhir got him the role for the team. He was associated with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as a mentor and took his team to the 2024 championship. Before this he was associated with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Now he will be seen in place of Rahul Dravid, who ended his term after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup

BCCI secretary Jay Shah revealed the name of the coach through social media platform ‘X’ where he said,

“It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward.

His clear vision for #TeamIndia, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The @BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey.”

To this tweet, Gautam firmly replied,

“Many thanks for your extremely kind words and constant support @JayShah bhai. Elated to be a part of this journey! The entire team together will strive for excellence and newer heights.”

After getting the post of the head coach, Gambhir said,

“India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I’m honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true!”

His first assignment for the team will start from the Sri Lanka series where the team will play 3 T20s and 3 ODIs and it will start from July 27 and will end on August 7th. The team is yet to be announced.

Earlier due to certain negotiations his announcement got delayed.

He played 242 international matches and has 10324 runs to his name. He hit 20 centuries and 56 half-centuries to his name. Due to his commendable batting performances in 2007 T20 World Cup final and 2011 ODI World Cup final, the team got the trophy to their name. Under his leadership role for KKR, he won two (2012 and 2014) IPL trophies.
