There are many players in international cricket who got the chance to represent their countries. But some of the players are there who have the fortune that not only they but also their son or grandson represented the country.
Many Countries have father-son duo who have played at the international level and make their country proud. All the duos were unable to play together in the international circuit but some of them managed in the domestic circuit to play together. Some of them in the Indian circuit are:
INDIA
Yograj Singh (father) – Yuvraj Singh (son)
Yograj Singh:
Yograj Singh is the father of Yuvraj Singh. He doesn’t have a fantastic career like his son Yuvraj. But he plays a major role to nourish his son’s game. He made his debut on 21st December 1980 against New Zealand. He just played one test match and 6 ODIs in his international career. He had two marriages, Yuvraj is from his first wife Shabnam Kaur. Since his cricketing career was not long, he tried his hands in acting where he did several hindi and Punjabi movies. One of his major hits was Bhaag Milka Bhaag in 2013.
Yuvraj Singh:
Yuvraj Singh is one of the greatest all-rounders that India got. Due to his brilliant performance in the 2011 ODI World Cup and 2007 T20 World cup, India was named as the champion. Also in the 2011 World Cup, he was named as the Player of the Tournament. He hit 6 sixes during the 2007 T20 World Cup against England and registered the fastest half-century by a player in international level. On 10 June 2019, he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket at international level. He has scored 11,778 international runs which includes 17 centuries and 71 half – centuries. Also he got 150 international wickets.
Lala Amarnath (father) – Mohinder Amarnath (son) & Surinder Amarnath (son)
Lala Amarnath:
He was Independent India’s first captain. He is also considered as a father figure for Indian Cricket. His achievement not only ends here, he was the first Indian who scored a Test century, which came against England in 1933.
Lala played 24 matches for India in which he scored 878 runs and hit 1 century and 4 half-centuries. Under his leadership India got their first ever test series victory in 1952 after defeating Pakistan by 2-1.
He received various prestigious awards from the Government of India. He got Padha Bhushan in 1991 and in 1994 he got the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.
Surinder Amarnath:
He is the elder son of Lala Amarnath. He made his debut against New Zealand in 1976 where he scored a century in the very first match he played and made 124 runs. In the domestic circuit he played against his Father in the money raising match for the National Defence Fund.
Surinder’s international career was not that long as he only played 10 Tests and 3 ODIs. He was well known for his destructive approach. He consistently makes his presence in the domestic circuit, where he scored 235 runs in the Irani Trophy which remained unbeaten for 38 years.
Mohinder Amarnath:
He is another son of Lala Amarnath who played for India, but is younger than Surinder Amarnath. He marked his international debut on 24th August 1969 against Australia. He was considered one of the best all-rounders in 80’s. Earlier he was considered to be a bowler, but later on he improved his batting skills and was batting at number 3 position for the team.
He played 69 Tests and 85 ODIs for India and made 4378 runs (Tests) and 1924 runs (ODIs). Also grabbed 32 wickets in Tests and 46 wickets in ODIs. Under his pocket he has 13 centuries and 37 half-centuries in the international circuit.
India won the 1983 ODI World Cup and he was the Man of the Series in that tournament due to brilliant performance. In the semi-final and finals he was the Man of the Match, where he shone in both batting and bowling. In the Semi-Final against England he scored 46 runs and took 2 crucial wickets of David Gower and Mike Gatting. In the final against West Indies he scored 26 runs and took 3 wickets, which ultimately made them the champions in that year. He was also the vice-captain of the team.
He got the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 and the same award was received by his father.
Roger Binny (Father) – Stuart Binny (Son)
Roger Binny:
Currently the President of BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), the topmost post in the management department in Indian Cricket. He is considered to be a bowling all-rounder. His brilliant bowling skills which he showed during the 1983 ODI World Cup and in 1985 World Championship of Cricket. In both the ICC tournaments he was the highest wicket-taker.
Due to his inconsistency he remained in and out from the team many times. In 99 matches (27 Test and 72 ODIs) he played for India and took 124 wickets (47 Test wickets & 77 ODI wickets). With the bat he also provided some healthy runs as he made 830 runs in Tests which included 5 half-centuries and in ODIs he made 629 runs including 1 half-century.
He was the U-19 coach for the Indian team and guided the team to their first ever World Cup victory. He coached Mohammad Kaif, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh in that World Cup, who later represented India in the senior level.
Before becoming the President of BCCI in 2022, he was earlier the President of Karnataka State Cricket Association (2019-22).
Stuart Binny:
He doesn’t have such a promising international career. He made his debut on 28th January 2014 against New Zealand in the ODI series. He only played 23 matches (6 tests, 14 ODIs and 3 T20s). He was considered to be a batting all-rounder. On 30th August 2021, announced his retirement from international cricket.
Though he has a short international career but his spell against Bangladesh where he took 6 wickets by giving away only 4 runs on 17th June 2014, was India’s best bowling spell which was later broken by Mohammad Shami in the 2023 ODI World Cup against New Zealand, where he dismissed 7 Kiwis by giving away 57 runs.
He is also one of those cricketers who played in the ICL (Indian Cricket League) before playing in the IPL (Indian Premier League). Established himself as an all-rounder in the ICL and played there for Hyderabad Heros for 2 years. After that when the BCCI made his statement against ICL, Binny humbly accepted the proposal and left that league. Later he played in the IPL for different franchises. Started his career for Mumbai Indians (MI) but later joined Rajasthan Royals (RR) and lastly he played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
Vijay Manjrekar (father) – Sanjay Manjrekar (son)
Vijay Manjrekar:
Played 55 tests for the Indian team in which he scored 3208 runs. In his career he managed 7 centuries and 15 half-centuries with an average of 39.12. He was a great batsman in that time, especially against the fast bowlers whom he picked very cleverley.
He made his debut against England on 30th December 1951. Due to his runs scoring ability he was promoted to number 3 in the team and contributed heavily with his batting.
Also he made an international record of scoring runs without hitting any six, which was later broken by England’s Jonathan Trott.
He died on 18th October 1983 at an age of 52.
Sanjay Manjrekar:
Played 37 Tests and 74 ODIs for India at international level. Scored 2043 runs in Tests and 1994 runs in ODIs. Under his bat he hit 5 centuries (4 Test and 1 ODI) and 24 half centuries (9 Test and 15 ODI). Sanjay made his debut on 25 November 1987 against West Indies in the Test series, where he got injured in the very first match he played.
His journey was not very long as he played his last match against South Africa on 20th November 1996. After that he chooses commentary as his profession. In his commentary, he got more success. But sometimes due to his some inappropriate comments he faces certain backlashes and ban in commentary.
One of the most highlighted was when he criticized Ravindra Jadeja during the 2019 ODI World Cup and said ‘bits and pieces player’. This comment pushed a ban on him and afterwards he apologized.
