Suryakumar Yadav who is one of the best T20 players in the world and currently number 1 batsman in the T20 rankings faces some difficulty in his batting in ODIs.
Yadav is having a pretty low average, close to 25 in ODI. He is still figuring out what will be best for him to get more sticking time in the ODI.
Recently during the West Indies series he was unable to score much in the ODIs and got out cheaply. Shreyas Iyer who is a strong contender for number 4 position in the Indian Team might get a chance ahead of Suryakumar Yadav, as Iyer performance in ODI is much better than Surya.
Surya is currently with team India in Bengaluru for the fitness and training camp. He will move to Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup tournament ahead. In the camp he talked with Rahul Dravid (head coach), Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma how to make a balance in the different format.
In an interview with Star Sports Suryakumar Yadav
Talking with Dravid, Kohli and Rohit
“The balance is very important in this format (ODI), and for that reason, I am doing a lot of practice and also having conversations regarding this with Rahul sir, Rohit bhai and Virat bhai. Hopefully with this tournament going forward I will crack the code.”
Regarding the approach and stability in the ODIs
“The reason this is because here you have to play like the other three formats. First by setting down with calmness and composure, then rotating the strike well, followed by at last the T20 gameplay. I am just trying to keep my intent and approach the same at least because it’s very important to stick to your approach when you are playing with this sport. But I am trying to play with the situation.”
For playing in different positions
“I feel the role which will be given to me, I will try to maintain that role, and if it’s a changed role I will try and do that. But yeah this one format which I.m really looking forward to doing well in. Everyone is saying that T20 is going well for me, both are white ball cricket but why am I not able to crack the code in the 50-over format. But I am doing my practice because according to me, this format is the most challenging one.”
