Sri Lanka makes their chances alive for the Semi Finals after defeating the defending champion England by 8 wickets. Now England from here have to win all their remaining matches and also depend upon the other results to make their presence into the next round.
England scored 156/10 in 33.2 overs and in reply Sri Lanka chased down the target easily in 25.4 overs and scored 160/2 runs.
After winning the toss, English captain Jos Butler opted to bat first.
The English openers started well and scored 45 runs for the first wicket. Jonny Bairstow (30 runs) and Dawid Malan (28 runs) started their innings well but were unable to convert that into a big one.
Ben Stokes (43 runs) was the highest scorer from the side. He was dropped earlier but couldn’t capitalize much longer. In his knock he hit 6 boundaries. After that none of the other batters tried to stick to the pitch and departed one after the other. Finally they only managed 156 runs in 33.2 overs by losing all their wickets.
Lahiru Kumara clinched 3 important wickets. Angelo Mathews showed his experience and in his comeback match he took 2 wickets and Kasun Rajitha also got 2 wickets. Maheesh Theekshana got 1 wicket.
During the chase, Lankans lost Kusal Perera (4 runs) early. Pathum Nissanka (77 runs not out) hit 4th consecutive half century in the World Cup. He is looking in great touch and in his innings he hit 7 fours and 2 sixes. He along with Sadeera Samarawickrama (65 runs not out) touched the final runs. Sadeera hit 7 fours and 1 six in his destructive knock. At the end they made 160 runs in 25.4 overs by losing 2 wickets only.
