Earlier Shami’s terrific bowling and later Kohli-Jadeja partnership helped India to register their World Cup victory after 20 years. They won the match by 4 wickets.
New Zealand scored 273/10 in 50 overs which India chased down in 48 overs and scored 274/6.
After winning the toss, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma opted to bowl first.
New Zealand got a poor start as they lost both of their openers in just 19 runs. After that a solid partnership of 159 runs built between Rachin Ravindra (75 runs) and Daryl Mitchell (130 runs). Mitchell hit his 1st century in the World Cup. In his innings he played 127 balls and hit 9 fours and 5 sixes.
Mitchell played till the end and got out in the last over. Due to his solid innings Kiwis posted 273 runs in 50 overs by losing all the wickets.
Mohammad Shami in his first match of the World Cup took 5 wickets. Kuldeep Yadav settled with 2 wickets while Mohammad Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah got 1 wicket each.
India started in a destructive way, especially Rohit Sharma (46 runs) took the main hand and destroyed all the bowlers he played. Shubman Gill (26 runs) started well but couldn’t continue much longer.
Then the inform batter, Virat Kohli (95 runs) took the game one handedly. He built solid partnerships with Shreyas Iyer (33 runs), KL Rahul (27 runs) and Ravindra Jadeja (39 runs not out). In the end Kohli missed his century by 5 runs and he hit 8 fours and 2 sixes. Jadeja took the game and scored the chasing runs in 48 overs and scored 274 runs by losing 6 wickets.
Lockie Ferguson got 2 wickets while Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry and Trent Boult got 1 wicket each.
