India vs Pakistan World Cup Summary

India and Pakistan the most awaited match in the World Cup. They played 7 matches against each other and India nailed it every time with a clinical record of 7-0. Pakistan is still to open their account in the ODI World Cup. Look at their journeys so far in the tournament. 

1992 World Cup: (4th March 1992)

The first time they met in the World Cup was in 1992. In the previous four tournaments they did not play against each other. This year Pakistan became the World champion for the first time.  

In this match, Mohammad Azharuddin was the skipper of the Indian side and Imran Khan was the skipper from the Pakistan side. Azharuddin after winning the toss opted to bat first. 

Due to slow over rate by Pakistan, it was bowled for only 49 overs. Sachin Tendulkar played a brilliant knock of 54 runs in 62 balls and took the score to 216/7 in 49 overs. Ajay Jadeja made some healthy runs of 46 runs at the start. Kapil Dev also contributed with 35 runs in the end with his destructive batting as he took only 26 balls. 

Mushtaq Ahmed claimed 3 wickets whereas Aaquib Javed got 2 wickets. 

Pakistan in reply only managed 173 runs in 48.1 overs and lost the match by 43 runs. Aamir Sohail scored the most runs which was 62 runs. He got little help from Javed Miandad, who scored 40 runs but took 110 balls. 

The three pacers- Kapil Dev, Javagal Srinath and Manoj Prabhakar grabbed 2 wickets each.

1996 World Cup: (9th March 1996)

These two arch rivals met in the 2nd Quarterfinals of the World Cup. In this match India won the match by 39 runs. 

In this match, Mohammad Azharuddin was the skipper from the Indian side while Aamer Sohail was the skipper from the Pakistani side. Wasim Akram ruled out from the match due to injury. 

Navjot Singh Sidhu put India in a stronghold by scoring 93 runs at the start. In the end Ajay Jadeja showed no mercy on the Pakistani bowlers and scored 45 runs in just 25 balls, especially when he targeted Waqaq Younis. With the help of their knocks, India scored 287 runs by losing 8 wickets in 50 overs. 

Waqar Younis and Mushtaq Ahmed got 2 wickets each. 

During the chase, Aamer Sohail and Saeed Anwar got 84 runs for the 1st wicket in 11 overs. A proper start which they wanted. Sohail scored 55 runs while Anwar scored 48 runs. But after their departure suddenly the wickets started falling and they managed only 248 runs in 49 overs by losing 9 wickets. They got a penalty of 1 over due to the slow over rate. 

Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble took 3 wickets each. 

Key Moment: During the chase, Aamer Sohail hit a boundary against Venkatesh Prasad and Sohail showed aggression by showing with his finger that he will hit again. Then just in the next delivery Prasad bowled him and took the revenge of his previous delivery.

1999 World Cup: (8th June 1999)

It was one of the toughest matches as during 1999 World Cup the Kargil War between both the countries were fought against each other. But still it didn’t create much difference during the tournament. India won the match by 47 runs. 

In this match, Mohammad Azharuddin was the skipper of the Indian side while Wasim Akram was the skipper of the Pakistani side. Azharuddin after winning the toss, elected to bat first. 

A great contribution in the middle overs by Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Azharuddin. Dravid scored 61 runs while Azharudding scored 59 runs. In the starting, Sachin Tendulkar started solid and provided 45 runs with the bat. 

Wasim Akram and Azhar Mahmood got 2 wickets each. 

During the chase, Pakistan team was unable to maintain a huge partnership which ultimately cost them the match as they lost  by 47 runs. Saeed Anwar with 36 runs and Inzamam-ul-Haq with 41 runs were the top scorers from the side. Moin Khan in the end contributed with 34 runs but was not enough to get par the required score. 

Venkatesh Prasad bowled his best performance in the ODIs as he took 5 wickets by giving away only 27 runs. Javagal Srinath got 3 wickets.

2003 World Cup: (1st March 2003)

They met at the Pool stage where they both were placed on Pool A. In this match India won the match easily by 6 wickets. 

In this match, Sourav Ganguly was the skipper of the Indian side while Waqar Younis was the skipper of the Pakistani side. Waqar won the toss and they opted to bat first. 

Pakistan scored a brilliant 273 runs in 50 overs with the help of Saeed Anwar’s century. He scored 101 runs in that match and gave a solid start to the team. Younis Khan with 32 runs and Rashid Latif with 29 runs assisted the team score in the end. 

Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra got 2 wickets each. 

During the chase, Sachin Tendulkar scored a splendid half century but missed from scoring his century by just 2 runs as he scored 98 runs in 75 balls. He took an aggressive stance against the pacers like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akhter. Yuvraj Singh also scored a half century and scored 50 runs and was well supported by Rahiul Dravid who scored 44 runs. These two took India to a victory in 45.4 overs.  

Waqar Younis got 2 wickets.

2011 World Cup: (30th March 2011)

It was the Semi Final round of the tournament where these two played against each other. India won the match 29 runs. Also India claimed the trophy again after 28 years and became the World champion. 

In this match, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the skipper from the Indian side whereas Shahid Afridi was the skipper of the Pakistani side. Dhoni, after winning the toss, elected to bat first. 

India scored a competitive score of 260 runs in 50 overs. Sachin Tendulkar played a brilliant 85 run innings. He was the top scorer from the side. Virender Sehwag showed his destruction in the start by scoring 38 runs in 25 balls, especially he targeted Umar Gul where he hit 5 fours in an over against him. Suresh Raina in the end provided 36 valuable runs.   

Wahab Riaz bowled his career best performance in the ODI as he took 5 wickets by giving away 46 runs. Saeed Ajmal got 2 wickets. 

Pakistan during the chase, started decently with 44 runs for the first wicket. But they managed 231 runs at the end and lost the match by 29 runs. Misbah-ul-Haq was the highest scorer with 56 runs to his credit. He was the last man who got dismissed. Mohammad Hafeez at the start played well with 43 runs. 

All the Indian bowlers got 2 wickets each. Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh are credited with the wickets. 

Key Moment: Sachin Tendulkar was dropped by 4 times during the match due to which he scored 85 runs and also he was given out LBW but he took DRS (Decision Review System) and where it shows that he was not out and the decision was overturned.

2015 World Cup: (15th February 2015)

Both the teams were in Pool B of the tournament. In this match India won by 76 runs. 

In that match, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the skipper of the Indian team and Misbah-ul-Haq was the skipper of the Pakistani side. Dhoni after winning the toss opted to bat first. 

India scored a brilliant 300 runs with the help of Virat Kohli’s century. He scored 107 runs. Shikhar Dhawan also played superbly in the opening and scored 73 runs. Later Suresh Raina played a destructive knock of 74 runs in which he took only 56 balls.  

Sohail Khan gets the credit for dismissing 5 Indian batsmen. 

Pakistan during the chase only managed 224 runs. Misbah-ul-Haq topped the team by scoring 76 runs. Ahmed Shehzad scored 47 runs but the rest of the batters didn’t perform well and ultimately they lost the match. 

Mohammad Shami bowled brilliantly and got 4 wickets. Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma shared 2 wickets each.

2019 World Cup: (16th June 2019)

There were no groups created in that tournament. A simple round robin format was adopted. India won the match by 89 runs by D/L method. 

In that match, Virat Kohli was the skipper of the Indian side while Sarfaraz Ahmed was the skipper from the Pakistani side. Sarfaraz after winning the toss opted to bowl first. 

India scored their highest World Cup total against Pakistan that was 336 runs. Rohit Sharma was in tremendous form in that tournament where he hit 5 centuries. In this match also he scored 140 runs with a strike rate of 123.89. Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan scored half centuries which ultimately took India to their highest total against their arch rival. 

Mohammad Amir got 3 wickets from his side. 

But after that rain started and the match was reduced to 40 overs and the revised target was 300 runs. 

Pakistan only managed 212 runs in 40 overs. Fakhar Zaman scored 62 runs and was the highest by his side. Imad Wasim scored 46 runs in the end but the target was out of touch with them. 

Vijay Shankar, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav got 2 wickets each.
