Shakib Al Hasan once again appointed as the Bangladesh captain in the ODIs. He is still leading in T20 and Test.
Hasan will be captaining the team in Asia Cup, New Zealand series and in the World Cup. He is appointed as a captain till the World Cup and the latter will be decided once he returns to his home since he is playing in the Lanka Premier League.
Shakib became the captain after Tamim Iqbal stepped down as the captain due to his back injury. Previously Tamim retired from international cricket but with the interference of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he withdrew the decision. But his injury makes him withdraw from the Asia Cup and most probably he might join the team during the New Zealand series. New Zealand series will happen after the Asia Cup. Liton Das was appointed the captain during the remaining matches of the Afghanistan series.
Bangladesh all rounder already led his team in 52 ODIs till now. He last led his country in ODI was in 2017.
Nazmul Hassan, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President
“Shakib Al Hasan is the captain for the Asia Cup, New Zealand series and World Cup. We will speak more to him when he returns to Bangladesh (playing in Lanka Premier League). We have to know his long term plan. I spoke to him on the phone yesterday. But it is better if we talk to him in person since he is busy with a franchise league currently. We will also talk about which format he will keep leading, whether it is all three formats or one or two of them.
There was never any confusion. I told you before. He is the obvious choice. Who else can lead? But we had to talk to him before appointing him. Nobody should think about anything else. Shakib is the captain. He was always the main choice.”
