The Ashes: History and Records.

The Ashes is played between two cricketing nations. They are Australia and England. It basically originated during the 1882 series when Australia won their first ever test match in English soil. After the defeat in a British newspaper “The Sporting Times” a mock obituary published and it said “ The English cricket had died and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia”.

In the 1882-83 series in Australia it became quite interesting and the captain of England at that time Ivo Bligh pledged to “regain those ashes” and the English media printed “the quest to regain the Ashes”.

In that series when England was leading the 3 match series by 2-0 then some Melbourne women presented Bligh a small terracotta urn. In that group of women, Florence Morphy was there whom Bligh later on got married. It was believed that the urn was of a wooden bail and was described as “the ashes of Australian cricket”. The urn remains in the MCC Museum at the Lords, London.

The Ashes mainly consists of 5 match series hosted by England and Australia once every two years. Winner of the series takes the trophy but if it gets drawn then the trophy remains with the last winning side.

Matches:

Till now 72 series have been played between the two nations. Australia won 34 series while England won 32 series and 6 series were drawn.
