One of the greatest batsman in World’s cricket Sunil Gavaskar throws the lights about why Mumbai Indians (MI) take Hardik Pandya as their leader by replacing Rohit Sharma.
Since Pandya got the leadership of Mumbai, it created huge chaos among the public and also between some former cricketers. Some of them were seen supporting the decision while some of them opposed this decision. Now the former Indian opener came up with the opinion regarding this huge decision taken by the franchise and said it in Star Sports,
“Look, they have always thought about the future of the franchise. Rohit Sharma is already 36 years old and also faces immense pressure being the captain of India for all three formats. They have tried to reduce some of that burden and give that responsibility to a young player like Hardik Pandya who has led a new franchise like the Gujarat Indians to back to back finals and even won the title. This is the thought behind MI for this change.”
Also he further added that how the Pandya’s captaincy will not help MI but also will boost the batting power of Rohit,
“Handing Hardik the captaincy is only going to benefit the Mumbai Indians. They have now given the freedom to Rohit to go and express himself freely at the top of the order. Hardik can then come at No.3 or No.5 and help them post totals of 200-plus consistently.”
Under Sharma’s captaincy, Mumbai did a fantastic job as they grabbed 5 titles till now under his leadership. He won 87 matches while lost 67 matches. Whereas Hardik got the leadership role in 2022 to a new franchise Gujarat Titans (GT) and took the franchise to the maiden title winner, whereas in 2023 he again took his team to the final but lost the final from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the last ball by 5 wickets.
